My name is Andrew Hosking from Melbourne, Australia and I am an avid historian of Porsche 550 and 550A spyders. I manage the website type550.com where I report on the latest events and sightings of these cars plus extensively research the race and ownership history of the ninety 550 and forty 550A models built. It is very much a passion of mine for the last 15 years and I spend many late nights (and early mornings) in my pursuit to build an accurate historical account for each of these unique cars.
Recently I was approached by the owner of 550A-0121, to help him find a new custodian for his spyder located in Monaco. The car is a fully restored Porsche 550A with matching numbers – not a common find these days, and after a four year body-off restoration, the spyder is now in concourse condition, ready for its new owner.
With the recent celebration of Porsche’s 70th anniversary of producing a pedigree of great sports cars, it would be timely to pay homage to one of their early models that set a benchmark in Porsche’s development of iconic race cars.
Behind every great Porsche is a great story and 550A-0121 is no exception. As the only Danish delivered 550A spyder, it raced both in Denmark by one of the country’s legendary track drivers and also in Africa by an accomplished female rally driver. These cars usually end up with one of the leading car auction houses, but this one is seeking a new owner through the classic car community who has a strong appreciation for the design and history of this model.
I commissioned classic car photographer Peter Singhof to photograph the car on quite an ominous day before the Monaco Historics in May. He captured the car beautifully in all its mystical glory – as a rare and valuable beast. Together with the provenance developed for this car plus information on the important evolution of the 550A design, it definitely makes an interesting read.
